Magh Pournima Yellamma Renukadevi

Every Magh Pournima of the Hindu calendar is celebrated in the honour of Goddess Renuka, also known as Yellamma devi. In Karnataka, it is known as Bharat Hunvi or BharatHunime.

Renuka devi is a symbol of ultimate marital sacrifice. Despite being raised a princess she was married to the severe sage Jamadgni, and lived a life of chastity and simplicity.

Being an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, she loves Pooran or Hoorna. So sweets made of hoorna, especially Kadabu, are made on this day.

Shakambhari Navratri 2021

Shakambhari Navratri is celebrated from Ashtami to Pournima in the Hindu month of Paush. In 2021 it starts on 21st and concludes on 28th. Here are the visuals from Badami Karnatak, which is one of her Shakira Pithas. Our family has the tradition of maintaining a nanda deepa throughout the navratri.

She is Goddess of Harvest so the Chaturthi, is celebrated as Palyad Habba, or the festival of vegetables. On the last day, the prasad is made of purana.

January 28th, 2021, is the conclusion of the navratri, celebrated by puja, aarti and prasad, which usually is Hurnad Holige or Puran Poli.

These are the pics of palyad habba, celebrated on Paush Shukla Chaturdashi, at our home. It is celebrated traditionally by making 108 types of vegetables but since we are at home, we can make eight vegetables. How is that? It is because we use gooseberry and ginger, which together have the qualities of hundred vegetables. So if we add these two to our preparation, we can count it as 108. 🙂🙂
