Some thoughts on the symbolism in the image of goddess Saraswati on Vasant Punchami.
Saraswati is the goddess of wisdom and learning, and the consort of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. Together they make the two halves of creation and the wisdom behind it. The goddess drapes white clothes as a symbol of purity, she sits on a swan, a symbol of eternity. She plays a Veena which is the symbol of life and she plays on its strings, as a depiction of harmony. The intent behind invoking goddess Saraswati during Vasant Panchami, or the beginning of spring is to wake up from the slumber of winter and gear up for an active learning of life's wise lessons. Spring itself is symbolic of nature waking up and blooming into its full beauty.
Today is a good day to begin learning for little children, honour books and teachers from all walks of life, a good day to be creative and be involved in activities involving meditation and quietness.
